05-Demo Post
This is a post demonstrating how to use the WordPress block editor. First, I’m going to make an unordered list of the specific items this post will cover.
- Create unordered and ordered lists.
- Create headings.
- Create links, both internal, i.e., to your site, and external, i.e. to another site
- Create an audio element.
1Creating lists
To begin making a list:
- Create a blank line before the list.
- Type a / (forward slash), then type the word ‘list’ (no quotes). Typing simply ‘/li’ (again no quotes) and waiting till the word ‘list’ appears in the block list view also works. It’ll be the first result. Press enter either way to select the list block.
- Another way, without typing /list, is to use Markdown syntax. To do that, start your list with a * (asterisk) or dash (hyphen) for an unordered list. To make an ordered list, type a letter (a b c) or number (1 2 3), followed by either a right parenthesis or period (.). Always follow the numbers, letters, asterisk, or dash by a space.
- It’s best to keep your listing style consistent throughout your document. So don’t intermix asterisks and hyphens in lists, & use numbers followed by a parenthesis or period consistently throughout.
- Insert a blank line at the end of the list by pressing enter twice.
Creating a Heading
The easiest way to create a heading is to press the shortcut keys alt+shift+1-6 at the beginning of the paragraph where you want to create a heading. Alt+shift+1 creates a heading level 1; alt+shift+2 makes a heading level 2, etc.
Another way to create a heading is to put the number of # (pound) symbols followed by a space followed by the heading text. So a heading level 2 would be preceded by 2 pound signs and a space, and then the heading title.
And, of course, because this is, after all, the block editor, you can type a forward slash, followed by h1 through h6 to create a heading level 1-6 of your choice.
The last way to create a heading is to go to the tool bar by pressing alt+f10, then ‘Paragraph > ‘Change block type or style. From there choose ‘heading & then select the desired level.
I personally prefer the number signs because I like Markdown. The keyboard shortcuts alt+shift & then 1-6 for the desired heading level, or typing /h1 through /h6 are also choices that make it possible to stay in the document and not have to exit it to go to a menu.
Creating Links
To create an external link:
- Type the link’s title the way you’d like it to appear to your visitors. In the example I gave, I typed “Protect Yourself with Passwords or pay” (without the quotes.
- Now go back to the beginning of the text and select it–I used shift+end to select the entire line.
- Next, press control+k and type the desired address in the combo-edit box. In my case, it’s https://www.brightstarsweb.com.
- To incorporate the link into your content, press the ‘Submit’ button. That’s all there is to it.
To create an internal link, that is, a link that points to a post or page on your site, press the left bracket key ([) twice. A list of the posts and pages appears. Select the one you want and press enter.
Creating an Audio Element
To create an audio element:
- Type forward slash, followed by “au” (that’s A u).
- The audio block appears in the block list view. Press enter to select it.
- Your options are to:
- Upload a file;
- Choose a file from your media library; or
- Use an external address.
To upload a file, press the ‘Upload file’ button. You’re presented with a standard browse file dialog. Pick the one you want and press enter.
